May 21, 2011
Did you know that May 21, 2011, is the day when Jesus returns and the end of the world begins?
I had heard about this before, but kudos to Not The Religious Type for reminding me about it. Harold Camping is the one who is predicting that this is the day when Jesus will return (which in my mind, the mere act of prediction means that it won’t be the day Jesus returns). Here’s his original ‘prophecy’, via San Francisco Chronicle –
The world will end May 21, 2011. This is not the first time Camping has made a bold prediction about Judgment Day.
On Sept. 6, 1994, dozens of Camping’s believers gathered inside Alameda’s Veterans Memorial Building to await the return of Christ, an event Camping had promised for two years. Followers dressed children in their Sunday best and held Bibles open-faced toward heaven.
But the world did not end. Camping allowed that he may have made a mathematical error. (Berton J. Biblical scholar’s date for rapture: May 21, 2011. January 1, 2010.
As Not the Religious Type points out, this isn’t the first time Harold Camping has predicted judgement day…and it probably won’t be the last. Theologically, he comes from a very narrow doctrinal position, one that has only been around for the last two hundred years or so. I personally tend to lean toward a premillenial, post-tribulational eschatology, meaning that Christ will return before his 1,000 year long reign on this earth, and that all Christians (“the Church”) will be around for seven years of intense suffering and world wide problems prior to this. I don’t believe there is any great escape of Christians as depicted in such fictional works as Left Behind. I could be wrong, but I just don’t see it happening that way.
Still, May 22 will be a great day. All I know is this: Jesus cannot possibly return or Rapture his church before July 23. I want to go see U2 at TCF Bank Stadium before he returns, and I’d like there to be a band on stage to play too.
(I was actually reminded of the “more recent than 2012” end of the world prediction by the woman who signed me up at LifeTime Fitness the other day…pretty cool woman, she seemed to know alot about it and what was going on…)
